What is Zumba®?

 Zumba® is a Latin inspired dance fitness class incorporating hypnotic Latin rhythms and the latest international tracks from around the world. Combined with easy to follow dance moves and exciting choreography using the Zumba® core steps formula ensures a full body workout and an exhilarating Zumba® Fitness experience.  Zumba® as we know and love it today was infact created by accident in Columbia 

by a man called ‘Beto Perez’ who is now the face of this global phenomenon.  In 1986 Beto was teaching Aerobics but had forgotten his music so he improvised with the music from tapes he had in his car.  They were a mixture of Salsa and Meringue tracks and Beto decided to teach a mixture of latin steps and fitness steps.  It was so popular his students requested this class instead of the previous aerobics class and Beto realised he may be on to something.  He could never have guessed just how big though and found success in 2001 after moving to the states securing a contract for fitness dvds and to create the ‘Zumba’ brand.  Over 7 million people now take a Zumba® class throughout the world and now you can be part of the Zumba family yourself – all of those people can’t be wrong!

What are the benefits of Zumba®?

The benefits of Zumba® include calorie burning, lowered body fat and better muscle tone, improved balance and coordination, lower blood pressure, increased bone density and core strength and an improved mood.  Warning Zumba® may cause extreme happiness (we call this the Zumba® buzz)!!

The calorie burning can help you lose weight combined with a healthy eating plan. An average person will burn about 400-600 calories in a one-hour class. The more effort you put in, the more calories you can burn.  If you fancy burning a major amount of calories, how about a double session or trying our exhilarating Zumba in the Nightclub session each Thursday which lasts for 90 minutes and incorporates 22 fat burning, pumping tracks?

Zumba® helps you use all kinds of different muscles, some of which you wouldn’t use during other forms of exercise – you’ll discover your body can move in ways you never thought possibe.  You can tone up your body from head to toe and Zumba® is especially great for targeting those problem areas around the bum, hips and thighs thanks to it’s hip wiggling, booty shaking moves. It builds your stamina and soon you’ll able to exercise for longer and sing along to all of your favourite tracks!  Zumba® is great for all ages as you can set your own pace and intensity and we encourage everyone to add their own ‘flavour’ as it would be a boring world if we all moved the same way!


“Feel good” hormones are released into the blood stream after exercise, so another great benefit from Zumba® is that it can improve your mood – you can’t help but smile and cheer, woop and clap as the Zumba party vibe takes hold!  Not only that, but the classes are a great way to meet new people and socialise with friends. Because it’s such a social and fun workout, you won’t get bored and find yourself looking at your watch – it will be the fatest hour of your week!

What happens at a Zumba ®class?

Each class is taught with the instructor facing the students and moves should be followed as you are looking into a mirror but there is no ‘left’ or ‘right’ in Zumba® so it really doesn’t  matter which way you go!  Every class is carefully planned to ensure everyone gets a safe, effective and fun Zumba® workout.  We always start with a structured warm-up to mobilise the joints, raise the body temperature and get the blood pumping. This is usually three tracks which a stretch routine to ensure our bodies are ready to start our Zumba® moves.  The main section usually includes nine tracks of high energy, uplifting routines covering a wide variety of dance styles.  To ensure we have no aches and pains the following day we always finish with two tracks to cool down and stretch out those hard working muscles.  Come along to discover your inner dancer (we all have one) and try moves from around the world from Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Cha, Cha, Cha, Bellydance, Greek, Rumba, Bhangra and more!
